studio_73_brixtonvillageSuper excited about this week which finally sees the release of Recipes from Brixton Village by Miss South and the traders of Brixton Village. It’s a beautiful book that’s the culmination of 18 months work and, we think, really captures the essence of the market and the incredible range of food businesses working from there.

So, how are we celebrating? Things kick off on Thursday night with a launch party at Studio 73, who are hosting an exhibition of work by our illustrator Kaylene Alder. Beer from Brixton Brewery and Celia Lager, music from DJ Spin, it’s going to be fun. Then on Sunday we’re hitting the delights of Herne Hill Market, where there’ll be tasters, signings and a chance to chat to Miss South from 11am, then a talk by Miss South at Herne Hill Books at 2pm. So come and say hello!

The book will be widely available from Thursday night onwards, and you can always get a copy direct from us (free p&p in the UK) or a signed copy from the Brixton Blog shop. We’d love to hear what you think…

The Savoy Kitchen – Available Now!

Sarah Savoy’s The Savoy Kitchen – A Family History of Cajun Food is now in the shops, and it’s looking just peachy. We celebrated the launch with a series of events up and down the east coast of Scotland where Sarah cooked gumbo, sang songs, played the accordion and generally kicked some ass. A big thanks to everyone who came out to say hello – we had a lot of fun.

Things kicked off at Forgan’s in St Andrews for a dining society special. On the menu: Crab Cakes Savoy, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Courtboillon, Stuffed Duck Breast, Pecan Pie and Bourbon Bread Pudding – there didn’t seem to be much left on the plates afterwards.  Then we hot-footed it up to the wonderful Hammerton Store in Aberdeen to hang out with Susan and blogger Foodie Quine.

Then on to Waterstones Dundee for a lovely evening of music and stories from Sarah and some more gumbo. On Friday it was Edinburgh, which was cold and beautiful as only Edinburgh can be. Sarah spent an hour chatting with Claire English and Peggy Brunache on Radio Scotland’s Kitchen Cafe – though frankly, once Sarah and Peggy got going they could have have been chatting for three…

The grand finale was at Looking Glass Books, where word of the free beer and gumbo had obviously got out: looking glass 2

We’re really excited about our latest title, Cookie Cooks, which was launched at Glasgow’s Aye Write! Book Festival on April 12. There was an amazing lineup for the Cookie Cabaret; fantastic food and wine from Cookie, music from Admiral Fallow, Dicky Trisco and Belle & Sebastian’s Richard Colburn, and live graffiti from Conzo Throb. BBC Radio Scotland’s Pennie Latin interviewed authors Melanie & Domenic0, then we all drank far too much wine while they signed books.

Cookie Cooks invite launch

It’s official… the Cookie Cabaret is coming! We’re launching Cookie Cooks at Glasgow’s Aye Write book festival next month.

To celebrate the opening of Aye Write! we’re throwing a party.  The Cabaret is a taster of the literary talent appearing at the festival, with readings from Denise Mina, William Letford and others. We’ve also got a headline appearance from hotly tipped Glasgow band Admiral Fallow: hear music from their acclaimed second album Tree Bursts in Snow. Plus we have a live DJ set from Dicky Trisco and Richard Colburn (Belle and Sebastian), and live art from graffitti artist Conzo Throb. The Cabaret also launches Cookie Cooks, the first cookery book from popular Glasgow restaurant Cookie. Owners Domenico and Mel will discuss their fusion of Scottish and Italian food traditions, and there will be a chance to sample some of their food and wine.

A great time was had at our launch party for The Killer Cookbook at Dundee Literary Festival. Raising funds for the University of Dundee’s Million for a Morgue campaign, a packed house were there to hear the Killer Cookbook ringleader, Caro Ramsay, and her criminal co-horts Russel D. McLean, T. F. Muir  and Craig Robertson discuss food, killing and everything in between. Highlights? Caro Ramsay’s description of one of her villains watching TV eating chips, (it was all in the detail, you don’t want to know where he was keeping the salt) and Craig Robertson’s recipe for human blood pudding (it thickens faster than pigs blood, by the way). Professor Sue Black presented Caro with her very own mug shot courtesy of illustrator Steve Carroll, and then everyone turned to the buffet of sick snacks prepared from the book. Thanks to everyone who came along to make it such a great night.
